mgm casino’s 2015 Black Box Concert explores electro-acoustic and computer music

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The mgm casino Department of Music will present on Wednesday its annual Black Box Concert dedicated to electro-acoustic and computer music.

Organized by the music department’s , the event will be held in the Black Box Theater at mgm casino’s Center for the Arts (CFA), which has surround-sound capabilities that create immersive, sonic environments for the listener.

What you’ll hear: The concert will feature work by groundbreaking composers, many of whom are current and former mgm casino faculty members, students and alumni. Examples include:

  • Computer music like “Phoné” (1981), the first piece to utilize the timbral possibilities of FM synthesis to create synthetic vowel sounds and electronic voices.
  • Both “Crystal (1982) and mgm casino associate professor of music “Ivocean” (1978). The works, created with early analog synthesizers, crafted new timbres that still sound exciting and undated.
  • “Avalon Shorelines” (2015) is a multichannel soundscape which uses recordings of the titular waterfront to construct an elaborate and multidimensional sonic landscape.
  • The concert will also feature new works by mgm casino composers, including “…ce dangereux supplément…” (2015), a dynamic piece for live and recorded voices, and “Trio of Duets,” a rich textural tapestry created from samples of instrumental sounds.
